Local, private conversion
PDF to Word,
without the upload.
PDFtoWord is a free browser-based tool that turns a PDF into an editable Word document (.docx) without uploading it anywhere. Drop in a file and get back a .docx — the conversion happens on your own device, so nothing about it ever touches a server.

Recommended up to 20MB per file · hard limit 50MB (see why below)
No cloud in the middle.
Most free converters work by uploading your file to a server, converting it there, and sending it back. This one doesn’t — the crossed-out cloud is the point. Everything happens in JavaScript, inside the tab you’re looking at right now.
How it works
01
Add your PDF
Drag it in or choose it from your files. It loads straight into your browser’s memory — no network request is made.
02
Text is extracted locally
A PDF-reading library runs in your tab, pulling out the text and rebuilding it into paragraphs, page by page.
03
Download the .docx
A real Word file is assembled on your device and handed straight to your downloads folder.
What to expect
Genuinely private
No upload endpoint exists for this tool to send your file to, even if it wanted to.
Free, no account
No sign-up, no email gate, no cap on how many files you convert.
Best on text documents
Letters, contracts, resumes, and reports convert cleanly. Complex tables and multi-column layouts won’t be perfectly rebuilt.
Works offline after load
Once the page has loaded, converting doesn’t need an internet connection.
Batch conversion
Add several PDFs at once and download them individually or together as a .zip.
No password-protected PDFs
Remove any password in your PDF reader first — this tool can’t unlock encrypted files.
Questions people ask
How do I convert a PDF to Word?
Open this page, drop your PDF into the tool (or choose it from your files), and wait a few seconds while the text is extracted in your browser. Click download and you’ll get a .docx file — no uploading, installing, or signing up required.
Does this tool upload my PDF anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your file is read from your device’s memory, converted, and offered back to you as a download — it is never sent over the network to any server.
What is the maximum PDF file size this tool can convert?
There is no server-imposed limit, since nothing is uploaded. In practice, your browser’s available memory is the limit. Files under 20MB convert quickly on any device. Files up to 50MB usually work fine on a laptop or desktop, though large or image-heavy PDFs may be slower on phones. The tool warns you above 20MB and blocks conversion above 50MB to avoid crashing the browser tab.
Will the Word document keep my original formatting, images, and tables?
Body text and paragraph breaks carry over reliably. Because the conversion happens client-side using text extraction rather than a full layout engine, complex elements like multi-column layouts, tables, and embedded images are not reconstructed. It works best on text-heavy documents like letters, contracts, resumes, and reports.
Do I need to install any software or create an account?
No installation and no account. Open the page, drop in a PDF, and download the .docx file it produces.
Is this PDF to Word converter free?
Yes, with no limit on the number of files you convert. There is no paid tier, because there is no server cost per conversion — your own device does the work.
Can it convert a password-protected PDF?
No. Password-protected or encrypted PDFs must have the password removed first, using the PDF reader that applied it, before this tool can read the text.
